PayPal payments

If you have a PayPal account (either a personal or a business account), you can connect this to Gift Up! and we will take payments using your PayPal account. You get the full gift card revenue deposited into your PayPal account immediately. We then collect our 3.49% fee in a monthly invoice we issue to you.

We do not recommend using PayPal as your your only payment processor; we recommend also attaching a Stripe or Square payments account as well.

Square and Stripe both allow you to sell gift cards with a credit/debit card as a payment method. Whilst PayPal does this also, it is not very obvious. This means that when presented with a "Pay with PayPal" button on your checkout, you will inevitably lose some sales as only around 25% of people have a PayPal account, whereas most people have access to a credit/debit card.

Connect your PayPal account

Log in to your Gift Up! dashboard and browse to

1) Click "Connect" in the PayPal card

2) Log into your PayPal account and Grant Permission to Gift Up! We only ask for access to your PayPal account email address. We cannot access funds with the permissions of our connection, by design.

3) After this you should be connected! Any gift card sale revenues will be deposited straight into your PayPal account.

Can my customers pay with a credit/debit card?

With our PayPal integration we allow your customers to pay with their card instead, BUT as PayPal control the buttons that get rendered in the checkout, it is not obvious that can pay with a card anonymously (and therefore do not need a PayPal account to pay for their gift card).

If you just have PayPal connected as a payment method in your Gift Up! settings, you'll present your customers with this:

If they click the "Pay with PayPal" button, a screen will open and your customers will have to navigate their way round PayPal's login screen to find a way to pay without logging in!
Take special notice about how PayPal present a login screen straight away, which is great if you're one of the 20% that's already a PayPal customer (varies by region of course), but if you're not a PayPal customer and want to pay with a credit card, the button you have to click is actually off screen! We must stress that PayPal design and size these screens, we have no control 😢
However, if you click the card icons themselves (underneath the big blue button), you'll get a more suitable screen straight away:
It is for this reason that if you want to accept payments using PayPal, you should consider also connecting a Stripe or Square payment account as well, so that your customers can pay with a card far more obviously. Here's how our we present the buttons if you have both a Stripe & PayPal account connected to Gift Up! - it's far more obvious how to pay for your gift card with a card.
